Monday DFS MLB Plays

Welcome to Monday’s edition of RotoMinds Daily MLB Plays. Tonight is going to seem like a very short slate with 3 of the 8 games having weather issues and one of the games is a Coors Field series. Throw in the fact that there is one obvious pitching selection tonight and you’re going to see a ton of overlap. This is great news for tournament players and poor news for the heavy cash grinders. We recommend playing less volume in cash games tonight because of the expected overlap.

Pitching Rankings

  1. Chris Sale
  2. Cole Hammels
  3. A.J. Burnett
  4. Lance McCullers
  5. Shelby Miller
  6. Mike Bolsinger
  7. Jimmy Nelson
  8. Ruby de la Rosa

Chris Sale is the obvious top play tonight at home against the Astros. The Astros are middle of the pack overall against LHP but they do strikeout a ton and Sale is an extreme strikeout pitcher. When you look at the slate it should be pretty obvious to you that Chris Sale is the top starting pitcher tonight. Burnett, Hammels and Miller are all in the next tier of pitchers and all make fine plays at SP2 tonight. Shelby Miller has the best matchup but he is clearly the least talented of the three guys in this group. Burnett is probably the most usable guy from this group. Hammels is an elite tournament option if this game is played without rain delays during the game.

  • Dioner Navarro
  • Yadier Molina
  • Russell Martin
  • Kurt Suzuki
  • Nick Hundley

Dioner Navarro ranks as the top catching target on FanDuel at the minimum price if he is in the lineup. Other top targets include Yadier Molina (best park shift at Coors) and Russell Martin (great park against weak LHP). Kurt Suzuki has a nice price tag on DraftKings and his value largely depends on the lineup position. The Rockies catchers make fine punt plays due to Coors Field but generally I’m not too excited about punting players against Lackey.

1st Base Rankings

  • Freddie Freeman
  • Adrian Gonzalez
  • Mark Reynolds
  • Ben Paulsen

Freedie Freeman and Adrian Gonzalez rank at the top of the list of 1B players in our model tonight. Freeman gets Ian Kennedy at home in Atlanta and Adrian Gonzalez gets a home game against Arizona. Both of these guys are probably better suited for tournaments tonight due to their prices relative to the other high ranking plays at the position. Mark Reynolds is getting more playing time with Matt Adams on the DL. Reynolds is a cost effective way to get Coors Field exposure tonight.

2nd Base Rankings

  • Brian Dozier
  • Kolten Wong
  • Neil Walker
  • Chase Utley
  • Jose Altuve

Brian Dozier earns the top spot at 2B tonight due to his extreme power upside against LHP. Dozier has been the lead-off man for the Twins. Dozier gets a HR prone SP in a good hitters park. Generally we will want to attack Coors as much as possible and middle infield positions are a great way to do so… however, we will certainly have exposure to Dozier tonight. Kolten Wong is the next obvious top play at 2B in the matchup at Coors Field. Wong faces David Hale who really struggles with LHB and Wong has shown the ability to hit for power this season. Dozier and Wong are the only two players you should be considering in your cash games tonight.

3rd Base Rankings

  • Josh Donaldson
  • Matt Carpenter
  • Danny Valencia
  • Trevor Plouffe

Third base is another position where the cash game plays are very obvious… a big reason why we are playing less volume with this slate because its just that obvious. Donaldson and Carpenter are the two top plays at any position tonight… get them in if you can afford them. Danny Valencia is a great way to get exposure to the Blue Jays tonight and Trevor Plouffe is a great tournament play as part of a Twins mini stack.

ShortStop Rankings

  • Troy Tulowitzki
  • Jhonny Peralta
  • Jose Reyes
  • Eduardo Escobar

Shortstop is very clear cut tonight… we want one of these 4 players in pretty much every game format. Reyes has the most upside with the power and speed combo but we prefer him against RHP not LHP. Peralta has the big park shift and is probably the best play.

Outfield Rankings

Jose Bautista is the #1 OF play and the #3 overall hitter in the model tonight. Bautista is fresh off a 2 HR game and gets LHP Brad Hand tonight at home in Toronto…. Easily the top play if salary cap is no issue.

Outfield Tier 1:

Matt Holliday, Jason Heyward, Jon Jay, Giancarlo Stanton, Charlie Blackmon, Randall Grichuk, Torii Hunter

Outfield Tier 2:

Carlos Gonzalez, Shane Robinson, David Peralta, Nick Markakis, Andre Etheir, Alex Gordon.

Mike’s Top Four Team Stacks

Cardinals – Carpenter, Wong, Holliday, Molina, Reynolds, Grichuck

Blue Jays – Donaldson, Bautista, Reyes, Valencia, Martin

Rockies, Blackmon, Gonzalez, Tulowitzki, Paulsen

Twins – Dozier, Plouffe, Hunter, Suzuki, Robinson

Good luck!

Be sure to use the our optimal lineups when they are posted later this afternoon.
