Welcome to Sunday’s edition of RotoMinds Daily MLB Plays. We will be playing the “all-day” slates on both FanDuel and DraftKings and the “early only” slate on FanDuel.
- Johnny Cueto
- Gerrit Cole
- Chris Archer
- Carlos Carrasco
- Jacob deGrom
- Zack Greinke
- Lance Lynn
Johnny Cueto earns the top spot today in large part due to the win probability on FanDuel. This is a situation similar to last night where David Price could have been considered the top play due to the win probability. We are also considering Gerrit Cole and Chris Archer in cash games and we love Lance Lynn, Jacob deGrom and Carlos Carrasco in tournaments. Pitching is very situational so ultimately who we use will come down to opposing lineup, weather and umpire.
- Rockies catchers (McKenry/Hundley)
- Buster Posey
- Jonathan Lucroy
- Stephen Vogt
The Rockies catchers both rank near the top of our model at the catcher position. We expect Nick Hundley to play today but McKenry is also in play if he is in the lineup. Jonathan Lucroy is the contrarian play that remains under priced but is more expensive than the Colorado catchers. Lucroy has a nice matchup with Mike Pelfry. Also consider Buster Posey in a positive park shift against a hittable pitcher. Posey should benefit from his teammates matchup/ability to get on base in front of him.
1st Base Rankings
- David Ortiz
- Brandon Belt
- Prince Fielder
- Justin Bour
- Lucas Duda
- Ben Paulsen
David Ortiz ranks as the top play at 1B in our model despite his recent struggles. Ortiz is an elite hitter against RHP and the price tag is just too low. I understand taking a wait and see approach with Ortiz but talk about buying low… Next in line are my two favorite tournament plays today…. Brandon Belt and Prince Fielder. Brandon Belt crushes sinkers and is decent against the slider. O’Sullivan throws 3 pitches… Fastball, Sinking fastball and slider. Justin Bour and Ben Paulsen are both great cash game plays that allow you exposure to Coors Field without paying a premium.
2nd Base Rankings
- Jason Kipnis
- Dee Gordon
- Chase Utley
- Joe Panik
- DJ LeMahieu
There are several viable options here at 2B today with Jason Kipnis in a great matchup against a pitcher who struggles with lefties and Dee Gordon against a RHP at Coors Field. We also really like DJ LeMahieu’s game script if he continues to hit 2nd against the rookie making his first start at Coors.
3rd Base Rankings
- Nolan Arenado
- Alex Rodriguez
- David Freese
- Evan Longoria
- Martin Prado
- Mike Moustakas
Nolan Arenado earns the top spot today against a Rookie pitcher making his first start at Coors Field. Arenado has elite power upside and gets the best hitting environment on the planet. Also consider Alex Rodriguez who is still under priced and under owned for his skill set. David Freese and Evan Longoria make decent tournament options against LHP. Martin Prado is another way to get Coors exposure at a reasonable price on FanDuel.
- Troy Tulowitzki
- Jordy Mercer
- Brandon Crawford
- Jake Elmore
Troy Tulowitzki is the obvious top play on Sunday at home against the rookie pitcher… The two best tournament options are Jordy Mercer (crushes LHP) and Brandon Crawford as part of a Giants mini stack/paired with Brandon Belt. O’Sullivan really struggles with lefty bats and Belt and Crawford benefit from a nice park shift here.
Mike Trout is the #1 OF play and the #2 overall hitter in the model tonight. Trout and the Angels get a nice park shift at Yankee stadium. If you have the cap then Trout is a great play…. obviously. (Repeat from yesterday
