Welcome to Thursday’s edition of RotoMinds Daily MLB Plays. Only six games tonight with limited pitching options once again. I recommend playing lighter than normal volume tonight.
- Julio Teheran
- Danny Salazar
- Clay Buchholz
- Matt Shoemaker
- Kyle Hendricks
- Jesse Chavez
Once again we have another night where the starting pitching options make you feel uncomfortable from the moment you look at the slate. Julio Teheran ranks as the number 1 pitcher for me tonight and that is kind of scary. Teheran has shown the ability to be a top tier pitcher at times but has never really put it all together for a long stretch. The issue with Teheran is the amount of hard contact he has allowed this year compared to the rest of his career. The K rate is still solid and that is enough for me on this short slate. Teheran has the added benefit of pitching at home (big park) and its an NL game where he will be facing a pitcher at the plate. My only worry with Teheran is Adam Lind. Danny Salazar is next in line thanks to his huge K upside. Salazar is the closest thing to a true outcome pitcher that we have… its either strikeout or home run. Salazar is pitching in the wrong ball park for a fly ball oriented pitcher. Also consider Clay Buccholz and Matt Shoemaker (weak lineup from TOR tonight)
- Stephen Vogt
- Miguel Montero
- Chris Iannetta
- Derek Norris
Stephen Vogt is the top play at a very weak catcher position tonight. Vogt gets a matchup with a young pitcher but the matchup is in a poor park for hitting. Vogt does have the platoon advantage and a great spot in the order. Miguel Montero is next in line for us tonight despite the negative park shift, I like Montero against Despainge. After that its basically punt the position or look at guys like Iannetta and Derek Norris again. Carlos Santana is an elite play where eligible if he is in the lineup tonight.
1st Base Rankings
- Mike Napoli
- Jose Abreu
- Adam Lind
- Freddie Freeman
- Anthony Rizzo
Mike Napoli is our top play at 1B tonight. Napoli has a .411 RotoMinds adjusted wOBA tonight. Napoli will hit 5th tonight at Fenway against Wandy Rodriguez. Jose Abreu is next line in against Salazar. Salazar has elite K numbers which is concerning but he also allows a ton of HR’s and Abreu is one of the best power hitters in the game. Abreu is a fine target in all formats on a short slate. Also consider Anthony Rizzo for tournaments. I love the Cubs stack in tournaments tonight.
2nd Base Rankings
- Dustin Pedroia
- Jason Kipnis
- Cory Spangenberg
- Nick Franklin
Dustin Pedroia is the obvious top play tonight against a LHP at home on a short slate. Don’t overthink this one… Pedroia is definitely the top play tonight. If you’re feeling contrarian then look to Jason Kipnis despite the L vs L matchup. John Danks is a nice man who doesn’t discriminate against left or right handed batters, everyone gets the same awful pitching! Nick Franklin is worth a deep look in tournaments if you have multiple entries.
3rd Base Rankings
- Kris Bryant
- Adrian Beltre
- Josh Donaldson
- David Freese
Kris Bryant is the top play on the short slate. Obviously there is a large negative park shift here but that doesn’t matter as much with only 6 games to pick from. Adrian Beltre also ranks fairly well tonight against Buchholz. Buchholz can be really good or really bad so that is more of a tournament play tonight for me.
- Xander Bogaerts
- Erick Aybar
- Marcus Semien
- Mike Aviles/Jose Ramirez
Xander Bogaerts ranks as the #1 shortstop play tonight.. that should tell you we are dealing with a short slate. Bogaerts did hit a HR last night and has been very kind to us this year… let’s see if he can come through again for us. The matchup is prime (considering the slate). Also consider Aybar in a positive park shift and whoever is in for the Indians tonight against John Danks.
- Hanley Ramirez, Mike Trout, Michael Brantley, Mookie Betts, Jose Bautista
- Ryan Raburn, Shin-Soo Choo, Melky Cabrera, Kole Calhoun, Shane Victorino
Hanley Ramirez and Mike Trout are the top plays tonight. Trout was kind to us last night with a huge game and very low owned. I expect another nice game from Trout tonight but you can bet his ownership % will be a little higher tonight. Hanley Ramirez is the top play in RotoMinds adjusted wOBA.
Look to the Red Sox OF for filler plays here. Pretty short slate so there isn’t much to say… reference the hitting data for additional plays.
Red Sox – Ramirez, Pedroia, Napole, Betts, Bogaerts
Cubs – Rizzo, Bryant, Montero, Fowler
Rangers – Choo, Beltre, Fielder
Braves – Freeman, Peterson, Markakis
Indians – Santana, Kipnis, Raburn, Brantley
